In a heartfelt tribute to her impact on the lives of many Friends Select students, a group of dedicated alumni has established the Josie Whitlock Endowment Fund.

This fund will provide support that will exist in perpetuity to help upper school students with financial need for tuition or other costs associated with their Friends Select experience.

Josie Whitlock P'80, '81 worked at Friends Select for over three decades, from 1973 until 2010, as an administrative assistant in the development office and upper school registrar. For many students, she was not just a staff member; she was also a pillar of support, a maternal figure, and a counselor. As one of the few employees of color at the time, Josie developed meaningful connections with students of color and served as a faculty advisor for the Minority Student Union.
Josie’s ability to connect with students on a personal level created a space where they felt seen, heard, and valued. “We knew we could go and talk to Josie in confidence, and she would listen and respond in love, but would also hold us accountable,” shared Foluké Bennett ’91, who helped spearhead fundraising efforts. “The Black alumni group wanted to do something to honor her because she was so special to so many of us.” Josie is also featured in A Friends Select Docuseries, which recently premiered in the school’s Blauvelt Theatre and in screenings held in New York City and elsewhere.

Endowment funds play a crucial role in supporting educational institutions by providing a stable, long-term source of financial assistance. Unlike contributions to the Friends Select Fund, which are typically used for immediate needs, endowment funds are invested to generate income over time. The income generated from the endowment can be used to support specific programs, scholarships, or initiatives, as designated by the donors.

The creation of the named fund by alumni in Josie’s honor is a testament to the meaningful connection and lasting impact she had on the students she served. “The Josie Whitlock Endowment Fund ensures Josie’s legacy is not only remembered but actively contributes to the well-being and success of Friends Select students, whom she cared for so deeply,” said Christine Jefferson, chief development officer. “It serves as a perpetual tribute to her and the legacy she has at the school.”
